Green Monkeys

Green monkeys of Barbados!

Look up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane it's a – Green Monkey! Brought by early settlers to Barbados 350 years ago, today these small, gregarious primates abound. Often cursed by local farmers for stealing mangoes and bananas, green monkeys are an important attraction of the Barbados' landscape. The monkeys, with their yellow and olive green speckled fur, live in the dense wooded areas of the hilly north and east of the island. Although visitors may spot a flash of green fur dashing across the road, for a sure sighting, head to the mangrove vegetation of the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, and the rugged territory of the Welshman Hall Gully. The best time to spot the monkeys is in the morning and early evening. If you're exploring in the afternoons, take a close look at the mangrove canopies to spy a family of snoozing monkeys.

Blow Holes

One of Barbados' natural wonders are the many blowholes scattered across the rocky shorelines of the North and East Coasts. Here, the waves of the Atlantic have created saw-toothed cliffs and carved out sea caves. When the ocean pounds its way into the underground caves, the pressure is released in a geyser-like explosion of water and spray. One of the most popular blowholes is found at the beach known as Little Bay. Located on the rugged cliffs of the northeast coast, this unique spot features tide pools, gorgeous scenery and spectacular blowholes. Be sure to wear a good pair of shoes if you're in search of blowholes, as the terrain can be quite rocky.

Folkestone Marine Park

Just one mile north of Holetown, you'll find outdoor fun and adventure at this popular recreational park. Visit the displays at the interpretive centre and museum, where you'll enjoy marine and coastal environment exhibits and a saltwater aquarium. Then it's down to the beach for snorkelling around the inshore reef, home to countless fish and marine life, including sea lilies, corals, sponges and sea anemones. Scuba dive at the nearby wreckage of the ship Stavronikita, or view it from a glass bottom boat. Back on shore, visitors enjoy a game of tennis or a basketball on the courts, have a picnic and play at the children's playground.

Barbados Wildlife Reserve
You've never seen a zoo like this before. Here, it's not just the visitors that come and go as they please. Most animals, with the exception of parrots and pythons, wander freely throughout the park. In this tropical sanctuary, exotic animals, reptiles and birds cohabit the wooded areas, streams and grasslands. Dedicated to conservation and research, the park is known for its work with injured and disabled animals. No two days are alike for visitors. Look up and down as you walk quietly along the shady paths and spy carefully in the bushes and trees to discover the wild world of animals.
Blowholes
Farley Hill National Park
Visitors to Farley Hill National Park may recognize the stellar grounds and spectacular landscape from the 1956 film "Island in the Sun." The Great House, which was considered the island's most stately mansion in the 19th Century and also featured in the film, was destroyed by fire in 1965. Yet, the grandeur of the estate remains. Today guests roam the pleasantly landscaped 17 acres of this estate-turned-park. With numerous picturesque views and a stunning panorama of the Atlantic, it's a perfect spot for picnics, wedding photos or romantic strolls.
Flower Forest
Just 3 km north of popular Harrison's Cave, you'll find another Barbados natural wonder. At the Flower Forest you'll discover 50 acres of lush greenery and commanding vistas. Located in the island's stunning Scotland District in St. Joseph, here you'll discover native island flora along with rare exotics, citrus and breadfruit trees. Along the meandering paths you'll enjoy sweeping views of the Chalky Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. A favourite with gardeners, photographers and romantics, a visit to the Flower Forest is a must!

Nestled on six acres and hugging a cliff overlooking the East Coast, the landscaped grounds bloom year round. Orchids, exotics and shrubs surround ponds, shady nooks, trickling streams, and rocky ledges. Mangrove Trees

Barbados boasts an amazing diversity of plant, animal and bird life. Much of that diversity is a result of the red and white Mangrove trees, nestled along the shores and in the swamps of the island. Mangrove trees, which thrive in wetlands where salt and fresh water meet, provide a home for many species. The endangered Yellow Warbler, plus marine life, wild parakeets, brown pelicans and blue herons make their home in the knotted roots and branches. To view this diverse ecosystem on land, visit Graeme Hall Swamp and Bird Sanctuary. Located in the parish of Christ Church, the swamp houses numerous uncommon plants as well as countless animals, birds and fish. They have completed Bds$18 million of improvements at the Sanctuary, which is fully accessible to physically challenged individuals. The largest fixed frame aviaries in the Caribbean are located here, as is the largest inland lake and mangrove woodland in Barbados St. Lawrence Lagoon. Here you can swim or snorkel to explore the marine life, seagrass beds, and deep hard coral reefs.

Welchman Hall Gully
Step back in time with a visit to Welchman Hall Gully. Created by the collapse of limestone caverns, the mile long ravine is home to hundreds of exotic trees and plants, and looks much the way Barbados did to explorers some 375 years ago. The cool, lush, gully is a popular spot for today's explorers and picnickers, who enjoy the tranquillity of the rare clove and nutmeg plants. Discover towering stalks of bamboo, vibrant flowers and looming branches of decorative and fruit-bearing trees. Pick up a brochure guide and follow the trail through the trees and blooms, identifying the flora as you go. And keep your eyes on the trees, you just never know when you'll spot one of Barbados' most popular inhabitants, the green monkey, swaying his way through the branches.

Trafalgar Square/Fountain Garden
In the heart of Bridgetown you'll find the lovely urban refuge of Trafalgar Square. In addition to the colourful floral displays, the park is known for its fountain. Erected in 1865 the commemorative fountain and gardens are popular spots to enjoy lunch, people watch, or plan your day while enjoying a cool drink.

Harrison's Cave
Discover a whole new world! Journey deep inside the heart of Barbados, to an amazing gallery of ancient stalactites, stalagmites, and glistening caves. Ride in electric wagons down through the extensive system of caverns, travelling beside crystalline streams as they cascade over waterfalls into deep emerald pools. Knowledgeable tour guides lead you through the lit caves and provide fascinating historical information. At the Visitor's Centre view an exhibit of Amerindian artefacts, browse the handicraft shops, or relax in the refreshment area. Harrison's Cave is open daily, with the first tour at 9 am and the last tour at 4 pm.
